Quote Versioning: Building smarter tools for sales efficiency

At Kin Insurance, our sales agents use proprietary tools to generate customized home insurance quotes for each customer. To improve both customer and agent experiences, our Product and Engineering teams recently built a new quote versioning tool that dramatically improved how agents create, manage, and modify quotes — and help our customers find an affordable rate.

Previously, generating multiple quotes was an time-consuming process. “Agents were essentially working around the system,” says Marie Ceranowicz, the product manager leading the initiative. “With quote versioning, we’re replacing a fragile workflow with a toolset that’s fast, safe, and scalable.

Our core enhancement was the creation of a new, independent “quote object.” When an agent saves a quote, the system now captures the exact coverage configuration (such as the deductible, coverage amounts, and other variables related to that quote), and generates a permanent, restorable version. This quote object allows agents to revert to prior quotes with a single click, automating what previously required manual reference to a PDF and a reentry of coverage fields.

“We’re giving agents a reliable ‘undo’ button,” explains Tim Giegel, principal engineer on the project. “It’s about eliminating the friction between a customer decision and the technical process needed to honor it.”

Quote versioning supports coverages, deductibles, discounts, and add-ons, reinstating them precisely as they were when a quote was saved. Agents can now navigate to a new quotes section in Kin's proprietary policy administration system to view saved configurations, identify versions by timestamp and content, and select one to instantaneously restore the active quote to previously specified terms. All changes are tracked, preserving an audit trail and reinforcing trust across compliance, legal, and sales operations.

This quote versioning feature makes our quote system easier to use, makes our agents more efficient, and offers customers a more streamlined experience. It could also unlock future data insights and platform improvements. By decoupling quotes from bound policies, Kin is making it easier to support experimentation, accurate reporting, and future integrations. “This unlocks smarter tooling and gives us a foundation to evolve,” says Ceranowicz. “It’s not just a back-end improvement — it’s an investment in making our systems more resilient and responsive to how people actually sell insurance.”
