Wildfire deductible

Kin’s Wildfire Deductible is an endorsement that modifies your insurance policy. It represents how much you pay out of pocket after you file a claim for damage caused by a wildfire.

Understanding your Kin Wildfire Deductible

In your Colorado policy, “wildfire” is defined as a rapidly spreading fire that is difficult to bring under control in an area that includes combustible vegetation, such as trees, grass, brush, or bushes, which fire causes widespread or severe damage to property, regardless of the source of ignition of the fire.

The Wildfire Deductible, which is listed in the “declarations” of your policy, is the amount of money you’ll pay out-of-pocket for covered losses caused directly or indirectly by a wildfire. After you pay that amount, your insurance policy will cover any remaining expenses for covered losses.

The Wildfire Deductible applies per wildfire “occurrence,” which means you could be responsible for multiple Wildfire Deductibles if more than one wildfire damages your home.

The Wildfire Deductible applies regardless of other causes or events that contribute to or aggravate the loss, whether such causes or events occur before, at the same time as, or after the loss caused by the wildfire.

The Wildfire Deductible is the only deductible that applies to losses caused by wildfire, which means that you won’t also have to pay the standard or “all other perils” deductible in the event of a wildfire loss.

What does this mean for you?

As a policyholder, understanding the Wildfire Deductible is critical for financial preparedness. Be sure to:

  • Review your policy declarations page to see the exact amount of your wildfire deductible.

  • Factor the higher threshold into your emergency savings plan.

  • Ensure you understand which coverages are and aren't impacted by this deductible.

Kin’s Wildfire Deductible Endorsement aims to create clearer expectations for homeowners facing one of nature’s most destructive forces. While it may introduce higher out-of-pocket costs in the event of a wildfire, it also reflects the growing need for insurance products to evolve in response to changing environmental risks.
